How to Choose the Right Plywood Grade
Start With the Water Exposure Question
The single most important factor in plywood grade selection is how much water contact the finished furniture will realistically see — not how "premium" a grade sounds. MR (Moisture Resistant) grade handles ambient humidity comfortably but isn't built for standing water. BWP (Boiling Water Proof) and Marine grade are boil-tested for continuous water exposure. Specifying BWP everywhere "to be safe" adds cost without benefit in rooms that never see water; specifying MR in a kitchen sink cabinet risks bonding failure within a few years.
MR Grade: The Sensible Default
For bedroom wardrobes, TV units, and general living-area furniture, MR grade is the standard, cost-effective choice. It's urea-formaldehyde bonded, IS-standard compliant, and termite-treated — more than adequate for furniture that stays in a dry room.
BWP / Marine Grade: For Water-Adjacent Areas
Kitchen base cabinets under the sink, bathroom vanities, and any exterior or semi-exterior furniture should use BWP or Marine grade phenolic-bonded plywood. The cost premium over MR grade is real, but far cheaper than replacing delaminated cabinetry a few years into the project.
Block Board and HDHMR: When Structure Matters More Than Moisture
For long shelves, load-bearing shutters, or furniture that will be CNC-routed with fine detail, the deciding factor shifts from moisture resistance to core structure. Block board's solid-strip core resists sagging under weight better than standard plywood; HDHMR's dense, uniform core machines more cleanly for routed profiles. Both are available in MR or BWP moisture grades, so you're not choosing between structure and moisture protection — just adding the structural consideration on top.
A Quick Decision Rule
If the furniture is within a metre of a water source or is exterior-facing, specify BWP or Marine grade. If it's long-span, load-bearing, or needs CNC routing, consider block board or HDHMR core regardless of moisture grade. Everything else in a dry interior can comfortably use MR grade without compromise.
